    Tax Lot Naming Conventions

Image not available Tax lots are named using township, range and section. The first 2 characters are the township, the second 2 characters are the range and the next 2 are the section. In the example, the lot is township 1 south, range 2 east, section 6. The next 2 characters are the quarter section and quarter-quarter section. In some cases the section has not been broken down into quarter sections or quarter-quarter sections. In other cases the section may be broken down into quarter sections, but not quarter-quarter sections. The last 5-digit number is the lot number.

Section, Quarter-Section, Township and Quarter-Township Naming Conventions

Section Index with quarter townships A township is a 36 square mile plot of land which is numbered by township and range. Township is numbered north or south of a baseline in 6 mile increments. Range is numbered east or west of a principal meridian in 6 mile increments. Each square mile within a township (640 acres) is a section. There are 36 sections to a township. Sections are numbered from right to left starting with 1 in the north east (upper right) corner of a township. The second row starts with section 7 immediately below section 6 and is numbered left to right. The rest of the Township is numbered in this manner, ending with section 36 in the south east (lower right) corner.

Quarter sections, quarter-quarter sections and quarter townships are named with A, B, C, or D. A is the northeast quarter, B is the northwest quarter, C is the southwest quarter and D is the southeast quarter.
